چکیده

[1] Simultaneous observations obtained by the Solwind coronagraph and Faraday rotation of the Helios radio frequency carrier signal in 1979 showed that CMEs produce characteristic ‘W’ or sigmoid transients in Faraday rotation observations similar to those observed by Pioneer 6 and 9 in 1968 and 1970. We demonstrate that a relaxed flux-rope model is capable of reproducing these observations. Through fitting the model to the observations, we can obtain information on the flux rope orientation, position, size, velocity, rate of change of rope radius and pitch angle. With electron density measurements, we can also obtain a measure of the magnetic field strength. These fits demonstrate that Faraday rotation observations can provide information on the magnetic field of a CME shortly after it erupts. Citation: Jensen, E. A., and C. T. Determining the Magnetic Field Orientation of Coronal Mass Ejections from Faraday Rotation

We describe a method with which to measure the magnetic field orientation of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) using Faraday rotation (FR). Two basic FR profiles, Gaussian-shaped with a single polarity or N-shaped with polarity reversals, are produced by a radio source occulted by a moving flux rope, depending on its orientation. These curves are consistent with Helios observations, providing evide...

LOFAR: The potential for solar and space weather studies

The Low Frequency array (LOFAR) will be a next generation digital aperture synthesis radio telescope covering the frequency range from 10 to 240MHz. The instrument will feature full polarisation and multi-beaming capability, and is currently in its design phase. This work highlights the solar, heliospheric and space weather applications where LOFAR, with its unique and unprecedented capabilitie...

Magnetic Field Structures of BL Lac Objects on Decaparsec Scales

Abstract. Relatively few Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) polarization observations have been carried out at 18 cm. The importance of such observations lies in their ability to reveal information about the jet magnetic (B) field structure and the environment of the jet on scales intermediate between those probed by higher-frequency VLBI and connected-element interferometers such as the ...

Assessing the tilt of the solar magnetic field axis through Faraday rotation observations

Context. Faraday rotation measurements of extragalactic radio sources during coronal occultation allow assessment of both the electron density distribution and the three-dimensional magnetic field topology in the outer solar corona. Aims. We simulate the three-dimensional structure of both the coronal magnetic field and the electron density distribution in order to reproduce the excess Faraday ...

Monte Carlo Studies of Transverse Faraday Rotation Profiles

Faraday Rotation measurements are a very important tool for investigating the magnetic (B) fields associated with the relativistic jets of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN); for example, a toroidal or helical B field component should give rise to a systematic gradient in the observed Faraday rotation across the jet. However, real observed radio images have finite resolution. Typical beam sizes for c...
